A Still Life with Apricots, Plums, Figs, Peaches and Grapes in a basket on a stone ledge, together with Pears, Squash and Asparagus has recently been reattributed to Adriaen van Utrecht by Fred Meijer who has dated this work as one of van Utrecht’s early paintings.
Adriaen van Utrecht was apprentice to Herman de Ryt in 1614 and later travelled to France, Italy and Germany before returning to Antwerp in 1625 where he was accepted as a master of the Guild of St. Luke. From 1626 to 1646 he taught seven apprentices including Ph. Gyselaer (1634/35). He is well known for his pantry scenes, farmyards with poultry, fish markets, game pieces, garlands and diverse still lifes of fruit and vegetables.
Van Utrecht adopted the same abundant displays of game, fruit and vegetables as Frans Snyders which are usually set on a table parallel to the picture plane; however, van Utrecht’s compositions typically fall in horizontal and vertical lines in contrast to the dynamic diagonals of Snyders. Baroque devices, such as a sweeping curtain, background window view and the overflow of accessories beyond the table-top, add depth and movement to his work. These features are all evident in the large work, Still life with Game, Vegetables and a Cockatoo (1650 Malibu, California, Getty Museum).
Van Utrecht favoured the use of warm earthy tones, especially greeny-grey, and a strong chiaroscuro light in his still lifes, the latter may derive from his knowledge of Italian painting picked up in his earlier travels through Europe. Van Utrecht’s style changed little during his career, save for the gradual elimination of figures in his work. The influence of Jan de Heem and Jan Fyt are evident. Van Utrecht is known to have collaborated with Jacob Jordaens, Erasmus Quellinus II and Thomas Willeboirts Bosschaert (1613/14 – 54) with whom he may have painted several paintings, by commission from Constantin Huygens, for Huis ten Bosch in The Hague, 1646.
