Literature:
Probably G. Probszt, Friedrich von Amerling: Der Altermeister der Wiener Porträtmalerie, Zurich, Leipzig and Vienna, 1927, no. 400.

The features of the sitter in this portrait resemble those of Elise Kreuzberger who sat to the artist on two other occasions (Probszt, op. cit., no. 392, fig. 60 (in the Liechtenstein Collection) and no. 403).

Born into a family of craftsman, Amerling trained from 1815 to 1824 at the Akademie der bildenden Künste in his hometown of Vienna. Thereafter he travelled extensively: he continued his studies at the Academy in Prague before spending two years in London (1827-8), where he met Sir Thomas Lawrence, who was to influence him greatly. He then visited Paris and Rome but was recalled to Vienna to paint a portrait of the emperor Francis I of Austria.

This commission established him as the leading portraitist there, working in a style that combined the elegance of British portraiture with the realism of the Viennese Biedermeier tradition. His sitters included not only members of the royal family but also the wealthy upper classes, prominent citizens and even fellow artists. He also produced a number of portrait studies such as this picture, which show just the sitter’s head. Notable for their spontaneity and immediacy, such works stand in contrast to his more studied formal portraiture and may be considered among the most striking achievements of European portraiture of the time. As an artist Amerling enjoyed an international reputation, particularly in the 1830s, although from 1850 on he failed to adapt to broader changes in painting.
