Cantarini’s work as an engraver and draughtsman has an extraordinary delicacy and vibrant luminosity. These qualities are clearly visible in the present drawing, where his spontaneous style and freedom of movement are striking. The sheet is probably a study from the later part of his career, inspired by the figure of Jupiter in Guido Reni’s [Battle of the Giants]. He often painted mythological and religious subjects, his style is highly original and eclectic due to the influence of a variety of different artists on his work and on him personally.
He first trained under the late mannerist painter Giovanni Giacomo Pandolfi, a follower of Federico Zuccaro. After a brief visit to Venice he returned to his hometown, Pesaro, to study under Claudio Ridolfi, with whom he shared an appreciation of Federico Barocci. It was around 1632 that Cantarini was struck by the work of Guido Reni, which had a profound affect on his style. He moved to Bologna in 1635 to work in Reni’s studio, where he became one of the master’s most eminent pupils. However the relationship between the two artists deteriorated due to Cantarini’s egotism which ultimately forced him to leave Bologna. Nevertheless, Reni’s influence remained apparent in his work.
With his departure from Bologna, Cantarini adopted a more personal and original style, drawing on his earlier interest in naturalism. His style became freer and more lyrical, moving away from academic classicism. He visited Rome in about 1640-42 where the works of Raphael made a profound impression on his style. In 1642 Cantarini returned to Bologna, where he opened his own studio. During this last period of his life, his skill as a draughtsman had become highly developed technically and compositionally. After he was unable to complete a portrait commission from Carlo II Gonzaga of Nevers he became seriously ill and died in Verona in 1648.
